Born March 4, 1956 in Anson County, NC, Alonzo was the son of the late Walter B. Phillips was the son of the late Bernice Leake Phillips. During his youth, he attended Poplar Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Polkton, NC. Alonzo attended Anson County public schools and graduated from Bowman High School. After his graduation, he was a loyal employee of Hardees restaurants for 20 years.

Rodney Jonathan Lyles was born on July 25, 1970 and is the son of Jacqueline Flowers Lyles and the late Samuel Roger Lykes. He graduated from Bowman High School in 1977, the University of North Carolina in 1981 with a degree in Business Administration, and Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Services in Atlanta in 1982. He promptly returned home to join his father in the family business which had been established by his grandfather, Harvey H. Leavitt, in McFarlan in 1914. His professional education, however, began long before his formal schooling. At an early age, both he and his sister assisted their parents with many of the day-to-day activities of the funeral home operation and closely observed the empathy and compassion with which their parents comforted the many families who came under their care. The new building was opened the following year just months before the death of his father. The original funeral home was donated to the Anson County Historical Society and presently serves as a museum for local history and artifacts.

After Hardees closed, he went to work next door at a Marketat convenience store and worked for a few more years. Rodney confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Gatewood Station AME Zion Church. He loved Christ and showed that love by being a friend to everyone he met. He is active with Little League baseball in Anson County, having coached a Wanso team that won a local championship. Several of his players made the Anson County All Star team and he also coached. During Rodney’s childhood, he developed a love for sports. He would play with the neighborhood children day and night. He also sponsored a baseball team so the kids would have something to look forward to and be a part of. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, building and restoring furniture, and sharing his work with family and friends.
